Opening a bank or fintech account in Lima

A plain-English rundown of how banking and payments work in Lima, Peru — the regulator to verify, the currency you'll transact in, how local accounts are addressed, and the rails that move your money. Treat these as the checks to make before you commit, not marketing.

The essentials

Four things worth confirming before you open or fund an account in Lima.

Regulator

Superintendencia de Banca, Seguros y AFP (SBS)

Banks, financiers, and e-money issuers serving Peruvian customers must be authorised and supervised by the SBS under the general banking law and the e-money law (Ley 29985). Check the SBS register before trusting a wallet or digital-account provider.

Currency

Peruvian sol (PEN)

Local accounts and everyday payments in Lima are denominated in Peruvian sol (PEN). Providers may also let you hold other currencies, but domestic transfers settle in PEN.

Account format

How accounts are addressed

Peruvian interbank transfers use the 20-digit CCI (Código de Cuenta Interbancaria), which encodes the bank code, branch, account number, and check digits; Peru does not use IBAN.

Payments & transfers

Moving money locally

The central bank (BCRP) settles high-value payments in its RTGS, low-value clearing runs through the CCE and ACH channels, and the interoperable BIM platform (run by Banco de la Nación) underpins the Yape and Plin wallets used for instant person-to-person transfers.

Before you open an account

  • Confirm the provider is licensed — check Superintendencia de Banca, Seguros y AFP (SBS) before you deposit money.
  • Expect to transact in Peruvian sol (PEN) for anything domestic.
  • Have the correct account details to hand — the format above is what a local transfer needs.
  • Check the transfer rail and timing so you know when money will actually arrive.
